In your hometown, how do the locals express fondness for each other?

I love this question. Usually by "talking story"- whether its on the bus,at a store, or even when someone comes by your house and you share some food. You don't need an invitation. If you know someone and go with them to a mutual friends house, you are made to feel right at home there too(sharing food.) Everything centers around sharing food and a common activity .If you are nice to a person, whether or not you know them, they will give you a "shaka" sign- middle fingers down, thumb and pinkie up. And people greet you in a way which shows you that you are accepted. Saying Hi then your name, like you are their best friend. People, although reserved in many ways, don't look at you like you are different and are tolerant, even though you may have 20 tattoos. Its just another thing to "talk" about. You can poke fun with a person and disagree with them, and people know you still like them and its all in fun. Everyone older than you is called Aunty or Uncle ,their name, and Grandma and Grandpa(their name). People are polite and always take time to talk to you, and help you, even though its in a low key and quiet way, even when busy. People there are the most polite drivers and in term of common courtesies. The poor and rich are treated with the same dignity and respect, as are people of different colors, most of the time.Contrary to what you have heard. I am talking about the lovely State of Hawaii. Oh,how I miss it.
