Will washing my hairbrush in shampoo work?

My friend used my hairbrush, just one or two strokes through her hair. I know I shouldn't have let her use it because a few years ago she told me that she's prone to getting head lice. I was really surprised that she asked me when she knew that. Well, will washing it in regular shampoo clean it efficiently?
